About Daniel Bivins
Bridging the gap between Design, Engineering, and Inclusive UX.
Learn more about how I approach this site's accessibility.
I am a Senior UX Designer and Accessibility Specialist with over a decade of experience building digital products that don't just meet compliance standards but exceed user expectations. Most recently, I served as a Lead at Ad Hoc, where I architected accessibility processes for the federal government (Healthcare.gov / Medicare.gov) to ensure critical services are available to everyone.
I specialize in Design Operations for Accessibility—creating the frameworks, annotation systems, and "Shift-Left" mentalities that allow cross-functional teams to scale inclusive design without sacrificing velocity.
The "Why" Behind My Work
- Deterministic Handoff: Providing engineers with clear, code-ready accessibility intent to eliminate guesswork.
- Operational Scale: Moving away from "one-off" audits toward repeatable, automated systems.
- Radical Inclusion: Designing for the "edges" to create a better experience for the center.
Speaking & Thought Leadership
I don't just implement accessibility; I help define the industry standard.
- Educator: Developed and taught the four-day "Being a Web A11y" masterclass for AIGA Los Angeles.
- Speaker: Featured presenter at Ad Hoc Accessibility Camp.
Writing
- I was fortunate enough to be apart of an amazing team that wrote: The Ad Hoc Accessibility Beyond Compliance Playbook
- As a co-author, Become an accessibility champion by using simple mockup annotations
- As a co-author, The right benchmarks for product design
- An Intro to Designing for Accessibility: a beginner's guide
Beyond the Screen
When I’m not advocating for a more inclusive web, you’ll find me on the trails as an avid runner or exploring complex soundscapes through my various musical projects. I thrive in mission-oriented organizations, inclusive team cultures, and environments with a steady supply of high-quality coffee.
